Asteroid Apophis Possible Impact In 2029?
In 2004 astronomers looked at Asteroid Apophis and gave it a 2.4 percent chance of impacting earth when it comes back around on April 13th, 2029. This would be bad news because it is a larger asteroid of 325 meters, or 1,066 feet. If Asteroid Apophis actually impacts our planet the blast could give off hundreds of megatons of pure destruction.
After a while of analyzing it’s path scientists came to the conclusion that Apophis will miss us by 31,300 kilmeters or 19,400 miles in the year 2029. It is then supposed to come around again in the year 2036 where Apophis is supposed to miss our planet by an even larger gap. They determined that this asteroid only has a 1 in one million chance of hitting us in that year. Still seems like there still is a possibility. There are a lot of things to take into consideration like gravitational pulls and such.
Asteroid Apophis is still very dangerous according to some astronomers and scientists around the world. There are reports coming out of Russia that some think that there is an even greater chance then what the astronomers in the United States are saying. There are rumors that they are preparing by coming up with ways to shoot it or push it away. We tend to believe in NASA and the United State’s data because it has been proven reliable, but it is always a good idea to keep an open mind about such future impacts because one day we will actually have an asteroid that is on a direct path with us and we should be prepared, after all, it is a matter of life and death.
There are more potential disastrous asteroids that have come close to earth. On February 15, 2013 asteroid 2012 DA14 passed lover than the area that has our satellites. It passed without incident obviously, but it could have caused some problems considering it being 150 feet across. That is large enough to cause harm.
More to come.
